Straw–mud
Straw–mud is a traditional, locally sourced composite made from earth, sand, and agricultural waste like straw. Low-cost and simple to produce, it combines the strengths of each material: straw provides flexibility and crack resistance, while earth offers structure and breathability, creating a natural layer with insulating, humidity-regulating, and sound-absorbing qualities.
The added natural fibers improve cohesion and reflect the ecological wisdom of vernacular building. The straw–mud is fire-resistant, repairable, breathable, and low-carbon—qualities that give this ancient material renewed relevance in sustainable architecture today.
